Barack Obama Congratulated Narendra Modi

Gandhinagar, Gujarat: United States President Barack Obama on Friday called up Indian prime minister-designate Narendra Modi and congratulated him on his "emphatic election victory", officials said.

Mr Obama said that the largest democracy in the world has given a "decisive mandate" and that he wished that under Narendra Modi's leadership, India will contribute significantly at the global stage.

Both leaders discussed the India-US Strategic Partnership and the prevailing global economic situation.

This was the first high-level contact between Mr Modi and the US leadership ever since 2005 when the Gujarat chief minister had been denied a US visa due to his alleged complicity in the 2002 riots in the state.

Mr Obama joined a number of world leaders including British Prime Minister David Cameron, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who have congratulated the Bharatiya Janata Party leader on the overwhelming win in the general elections.

Dwayne Johnson, AKA The Rock, hasn’t died but there’s several different Facebook and social media scams going around this week saying he either died on the set of “Fast & Furious 7” or died during a fall in New Zealand. These are both scams and can carry bogus surveys, rogue Facebook apps, or can carry possibly malware.

The scams have been going on for the past few days, and Johnson has been tweeting the whole time. He didn’t make any mention of a death hoax but posted an Instagram video of him working out in the gym Friday.

On Friday and Saturday, people were tweeting “RIP Dwayne Johnson.” One of the scams reads, “R.I.P. DWAYNE JOHNSON (1972 -2014). He died filming a dangerous stunt for FAST & FURIOUS 7.” Another says, “Actor Dwayne Johnson died while filming a movie in New Zealand early this morning … Preliminary reports from New Zealand Police officials indicate that the actor fell more than 60 feet to his death on the Kauri Cliffs while on-set.”

Scammers likely created these the hoaxes to get web traffic to a particular web page, which is then sold to other scammers, who can use it for more nefarious purposes. One of the pages has surveys that are used to take users’ personal data.

“After sharing as instructed, users will be taken to another page that again supposedly hosts the video. But, users will now be told that they must perform further actions before they can see the video. They may be told that they must fill in one or more surveys, ostensibly to verify their age or show that they are human. Or, they may be asked to install rogue apps that will send out spam and scam messages to all of their friends. In some instances, users may be tricked into adding malicious extensions to their web browsers or downloading malware,” reads a post from Hoax-Slayer.

Celebrity death hoaxes are a common way to spread online scams.

If you’ve downloaded a rogue Facebook app, it’s recommended that you remove it app from your account. You should also “unlike” or delete any post you’ve shared regarding the Johnson death hoax.

To remove the app, log into your Facebook account, and go to your Facebook application settings. This page lists all the applications that you have given access to.

Go below and then click on the “X” on the right side of the app in order to remove it. Some of the fake apps use names like “Fox News,” “Yahoo,” or “YouTube” to trick users.

For some websites, they can also prove to be lucrative if they go viral.

Indian American scientist Manu Prakash invents $5 chemistry set

WASHINGTON, DC: Stanford scientist Manu Prakash is at the helm of yet another piece of cutting-edge, affordable technology that could help mitigate the prevalence of infectious disease in under-developed areas around the world: a $5 chemistry set.

The set was developed out of an unlikely source: a music box. In a piece by Amy Adams, at Stanford University, Prakash explains that the hand-crank mechanism of the music box spurred the idea to create a chemistry set with a similar way of operating. Collaborating with graduate student George Korir, Prakash developed a way to insert a microfluid silicon chip into a small box with a hand-crank. This chip can read the levels of various chemicals found in a liquid sample, and feed the data out via holes punched into a long paper strip that runs through the box.

As the user turns the hand-crank, which self-powers the machine, the paper goes through the box, and holes are punched in it that can then be used to determine what kinds of compounds are found in the liquid dropped into the box. The simplest version of this self-contained chemistry set includes fifteen independent pumps, valves and droplet generators, all of which are controlled simultaneously. The machine is also programmable, and when done, the whole set can be opened up, rinsed out, and prepared for a new experiment.

The silicon chip is generally considered to be an expensive piece of machinery, mainly because it requires a lot of power in order to function. But by making the chemistry set self-sufficient via the hand-crank, the cost of that component drops considerably. In fact, Prakash tells the Stanford Daily that all the components of the set cost around five bucks.

Prakash’s vision is that these relatively simple machines can be used by people in areas of the world where sanitation and water quality are an issue. Parts of Africa and Asia continue to be afflicted by horrendous water quality, leading to several diseases that often kill people who are young or weak. The subject hits close to home for both Prakash and Korir, who are from India and Kenya, respectively.

This is not the first device Prakash has designed with the goal of being both affordable and innovative: just last week, it was announced that Prakash is the man behind an incredibly low-cost microscope, made entirely out of paper, which he hopes will be used by young children who aspire to be scientists, but may not necessarily have access to the most cutting edge laboratories and equipment.

World's largest gold crystal is here

A heavy piece of gold, found years ago in Venezuela, has now been identified as the world's largest single crystal of gold.

Worth an estimated $1.5 million (about Rs.9 crore), the rare lump of gold weighs 217.78 grams and is the size of a golf ball.

"The structure or atomic arrangement of gold crystals of this size has never been studied before, and we have a unique opportunity to do so," Miami University geologist John Rakovan was quoted as saying.

To determine the internal structure of the gold lump, Rakovan's researchers used two sophisticated machines: a neutron single-crystal diffraction (SCD) instrument, which determines the atomic arrangement of single crystals; and a high-pressure/preferred orientation (or HIPPO) instrument, which measures the crystal structure and the orientation of crystals in a polycrystalline material.

They found that the gold piece was indeed a very rare single crystal of gold.

Its owner, who lives in the US, provided the samples to Rakovan to assess the crystallinity of the specimen, one of four that he has. All of them were found decades ago in a river in Venezuela.
Proving it was a crystal would mean it was created entirely naturally -- and increase its value, reports said.

India’s ‘Mangalyan’ crosses half way mark to Mars

"In terms of radio distance, the 1,337 kg Orbiter is cruising at 39 million km away from earth, travelling at 1.55 km per second in the sun's orbit," ISRO said in a statement.

The Mars Orbiter Mission ‘Mangalyan’ was launched on November 5, 2013, from Sriharikota spaceport off the Bay of Bengal, onboard a 350-tonne rocket with five scientific instruments to detect methane in the Martian atmosphere, measure the thermal emission and capture images of the red planet from its orbit at a distance of 500 km.

The orbiter is expected to reach the Mars on September 24 this year. Incidentally, the spacecraft is crossing the halfway mark a day after the Earth was at its closest to the red planet.

Touching an asteroid and bringing some of it home

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - UA scientists have a green light for a space flight that could help understand how life formed on Earth, and could help save life on Earth from destruction.

The UA team just got NASA's approval to build the flight hardware for OSIRIS REx, a space probe that will orbit an asteroid, grab a sample, and bring it back to Earth.
       
It's an exciting milestone for a mission that's already been in the works for ten years.
   
By passing a rigorous NASA review, OSIRIS REx is cleared to go from plans and blueprints, to hardware. That hardware will head to an asteroid called Bennu to learn more about early life, and maybe ways to keep an asteroid from snuffing out life.

OSIRIS REx is to ease into orbit around an asteroid named Bennu.

OSIRIS REx Principal Investigator Dante Lauretta says Bennu is…"one of the most potentially hazardous asteroids known to humanity.  We're going to understand it's orbit and all the small forces that deviate it's orbit as it goes through the solar system."

Dante Lauretta is leading the mission.  He says measurements from Osiris Rex could help scientists learn to change an asteroid's course from a life threatening hit, to a life saving miss.
   
After orbiting Bennus, the mission has even more delicate moves.

The spacecraft is to ease down  and touch down with sort of a space vacuum cleaner, then pick up a sample in hopes rock isolated in space for so long will have frozen a snapshot of the early chemistry of life. 
        
Then the arm pushes the probe away.

Lauretta says, "It's a pogo stick, so we have a spring in this forearm here and that's part of the energy we use to rebound off the asteroid surface." 

OSIRIS REx heads home after that to bring the first asteroid sample back to Earth.

A lot of the precision required will be built in the clean room where UA scientists will build some of the cameras OSIRIS REx will fly.  The clean room required us to dress like surgeons, so not a single hair could float onto a sensor.  To make sure instruments survive the harshness of space, equipment here will heat test items to as hot as boiling water, and chill them to almost 300 degrees below zero.
    
A trip to the contractor who will assemble the spacecraft made Engineer and Instrument Scientist Bashar Rizk reflect on where his work will be going.

"We all found ourselves staring at the various bits of the spacecraft, in awe contemplating that within two years it will be launched out into a place where no human can survive."
    
This sort of exploring takes nerve, and patience.  Launch is set for two years from now.  The probe arrives at the asteroid four years from now, and brings back the sample seven years from now.
    
Some tricky things have to go right in that timeline.
    
That's why space scientists say their work is boredom broken by spells of sheer terror.

SC says no to new SIT probe against Modi

The petitioner, Advocate Fatima, had questioned the clean chit given to Chief Minister Narendra Modi by the apex court appointed SIT and wanted the SIT to be reconstituted with a retired Supreme Court judge as its member.

‘‘Reconstitution of SIT at this stage is not good,” the Bench observed, which prompted the petitioner to withdraw her petition.

The SIT headed by former CBI chief R K Raghavan was appointed by the Supreme Court to probe nine cases related to the 2002 riots. In its 541-page report, the SIT said no evidence was found to prosecute Modi in any of the nine cases. The Apex Court had earlier expressed satisfaction over the SIT’s probe.

At least 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were burned and hacked to death during the 2002 Gujarat riots, for which the Congress and some other parties have squarely blamed Modi in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Human rights groups and political rivals have long alleged that Modi allowed or even actively encouraged the 2002 attacks. Modi has always vehemently denied the charge, insisting that he did all that he could to stop the violence.

Jashodaben, named by Narendra Modi as his wife, prays for him to become PM

She has been drawn in the political slugfest by Narendra Modi's rivals to target him, but decades of separation from Gujarat Chief Minister has not embittered Jashodaben, who fasts and prays for her husband to become the Prime Minister.

The reclusive 62-year-old retired school teacher has vowed not to eat rice and remain bare-footed till she sees her husband become the Prime Minister, says Jashodaben's brother Kamlesh.

"Jashodaben wishes from her heart that from being a Chief Minister, he (Modi) rises to become the Prime Minister of the country. She prays for that," he said.

Jashodaben has now proceeded on a 'char dhaam yatra' to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri for fulfillment of the wish, he added.

Living in a small village Ishwarwada in Mehasana district of North Gujarat with her two brothers, Jashodaben, according to her family, is a devout person and leads a simple life.

"She wakes up early in the morning, prays and visits temple... after that she is busy with her daily routine. She also watches news and reads all newspaper reports about him," Kamlesh said.

"Also, if someone speaks ill of him (Modi), she does not tolerate it. Otherwise, she is very mild-natured and never raises her voice against anybody," he said.

Eldest of our four siblings, Jashodaben got married to Mr Modi in 1968 aged barely 17 years.

In an interview published in a Gujarati weekly magazine, Jashodaben had said their stay together was very brief.

Mr Modi, who soon after their marriage left his home to become a RSS pracharak, had inspired her to study further after which she pursued her Primary Teachers Training (PTC) course and got a job.

The Gujarat Chief Minister's elder brother Somabhai said on Thursday that Mr Modi's marriage to Jashodaben had "turned out" to be a "social formality". (Read: Rahul Gandhi targets Narendra Modi over admission of marriage)

"Our parents had not studied much and we were a poor family. To them, Narendra was like any other child. In such context, our parents conducted his marriage at a tender age with Jashodaben, but it turned out to be just a social formality for the sake of it," Somabhai had said. Is Hockey not India's national game?

We may be assuming Hockey, the game which fetched six consecutive Olympic gold medals, to be our national game but the fact is none of the games or sports played in the country has the status of "national game."

In an RTI reply, the Sports Ministry has made it clear that it has not declared any sports as national game whereas the web portal of Government www.india.gov.in has posted an article glorifying field hockey under the heading 'National Game'.

The curiosity about national symbols drove Lucknow-based 10-year-old Aishwarya Parashar to file an RTI application to  the Prime Minister's Office seeking certified copies of orders related to declaration of National anthem, song, sport, animal, bird, flower and symbol.

Her queries were transferred to the Home Ministry which forwarded the query related to National Sport to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

In a reply, Sports Ministry Under Secretary Shiv Pratap Singh Tomar wrote in Hindi to Aishwarya that the Ministry has not declared any sport or game to be the National Game.

Surprisingly, the government portal under the head National symbol has given details of 14 such symbols which include - flag, bird, flower, tree, anthem, river, aquatic animal, state emblem, calender, animal, song, fruit, game, currency symbol.

The portal says, "Indians of all demographics backgrounds across the world are proud of these National Symbols as they infuse a sense of pride and patriotism in every Indian's heart."
