Dwayne Johnson [ THE ROCK ] Dead?

Dwayne Johnson, AKA The Rock, hasn’t died but there’s several different Facebook and social media scams going around this week saying he either died on the set of “Fast & Furious 7” or died during a fall in New Zealand. These are both scams and can carry bogus surveys, rogue Facebook apps, or can carry possibly malware.

The scams have been going on for the past few days, and Johnson has been tweeting the whole time. He didn’t make any mention of a death hoax but posted an Instagram video of him working out in the gym Friday.

On Friday and Saturday, people were tweeting “RIP Dwayne Johnson.” One of the scams reads, “R.I.P. DWAYNE JOHNSON (1972 -2014). He died filming a dangerous stunt for FAST & FURIOUS 7.” Another says, “Actor Dwayne Johnson died while filming a movie in New Zealand early this morning … Preliminary reports from New Zealand Police officials indicate that the actor fell more than 60 feet to his death on the Kauri Cliffs while on-set.”

Scammers likely created these the hoaxes to get web traffic to a particular web page, which is then sold to other scammers, who can use it for more nefarious purposes. One of the pages has surveys that are used to take users’ personal data.

“After sharing as instructed, users will be taken to another page that again supposedly hosts the video. But, users will now be told that they must perform further actions before they can see the video. They may be told that they must fill in one or more surveys, ostensibly to verify their age or show that they are human. Or, they may be asked to install rogue apps that will send out spam and scam messages to all of their friends. In some instances, users may be tricked into adding malicious extensions to their web browsers or downloading malware,” reads a post from Hoax-Slayer.

Celebrity death hoaxes are a common way to spread online scams.

If you’ve downloaded a rogue Facebook app, it’s recommended that you remove it app from your account. You should also “unlike” or delete any post you’ve shared regarding the Johnson death hoax.

To remove the app, log into your Facebook account, and go to your Facebook application settings. This page lists all the applications that you have given access to.

Go below and then click on the “X” on the right side of the app in order to remove it. Some of the fake apps use names like “Fox News,” “Yahoo,” or “YouTube” to trick users.

For some websites, they can also prove to be lucrative if they go viral.

World's largest gold crystal is here

A heavy piece of gold, found years ago in Venezuela, has now been identified as the world's largest single crystal of gold.

Worth an estimated $1.5 million (about Rs.9 crore), the rare lump of gold weighs 217.78 grams and is the size of a golf ball.

"The structure or atomic arrangement of gold crystals of this size has never been studied before, and we have a unique opportunity to do so," Miami University geologist John Rakovan was quoted as saying.

To determine the internal structure of the gold lump, Rakovan's researchers used two sophisticated machines: a neutron single-crystal diffraction (SCD) instrument, which determines the atomic arrangement of single crystals; and a high-pressure/preferred orientation (or HIPPO) instrument, which measures the crystal structure and the orientation of crystals in a polycrystalline material.

They found that the gold piece was indeed a very rare single crystal of gold.

Its owner, who lives in the US, provided the samples to Rakovan to assess the crystallinity of the specimen, one of four that he has. All of them were found decades ago in a river in Venezuela.
Proving it was a crystal would mean it was created entirely naturally -- and increase its value, reports said.

  Around 11am on Wednesday, the Mumbai International Airport's mosquito-infested Terminal 2, hailed as one of the swankiest in the country, received around 10 bug-killing devices specially designed by the scientists at the NASA. 

The devices, each costing Rs 70,000, appear nondescript: a one-and-a-half-ft tall olive green box mounted on a stand, and attached to a cylinder filled with carbon dioxide, but those are being labeled 'the most lethal bug killing system' requiring zero maintenance.

Aviral Resources, the firm appointed by the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) to tackle the mosquito menace, claims a single device can kill up to 15,000 mosquitoes every night.

Since the time the terminal was thrown open to public on February 12 this year, the MIAL has tried every mosquito-killing tactic in the book, even as flyers continued to highlight the problem through tweets and Facebook posts.

After the regular mosquito repellents, electric zappers and mosquito mats failed, the MIAL turned off the water fountains at the terminal (the fountains were termed as 'major attraction' during the launch) and even put guppy fish into the Meethi river and the gutters near the airport hoping they will feast on the mosquitoes.

City based advertising executive Sanjeev Singhai, who's used the terminal a few times, said there has been no respite from mosquitoes even in the business class lounge. "The terminal is otherwise a world-class structure and Mumbaiites are proud of it, but the authorities must address this problem," he said.

How the device works

Acreation of Nasa, the US government agency that leads aeronautics and aerospace research globally and is responsible for the American civil space programme, the device works on "mosquitoes' natural hunting techniques of heat-sensing and carbon dioxide detection," an MIAL spokesperson said.

"The device creates temperatures similar to humans and also releases exactly the same amount of carbon dioxide that a human body releases. Through thermal imagery and the measured release of carbon dioxide, the mosquitoes are drawn to the device, which captures and kills them," the spokesperson said, adding that the Aviral Resources officials claimed a single device can kill up to 15,000 mosquitoes a night.

A BMC audit of the possible breeding grounds of mosquitoes, conducted following an MIAL request, revealed the problem was caused due to the airport's proximity to the Meethi river and the nullahs.

The airport spokesperson said that Aviral Resources has been roped in to carry out fumigation of the terminal twice a day, and also along the Meethi River stretch.

"Since the first week of March, Aviral officials along with the BMC have been fumigating the terminal twice a day and also spots along the Meethi river," the airport spokesperson said.

SC says no to new SIT probe against Modi

The petitioner, Advocate Fatima, had questioned the clean chit given to Chief Minister Narendra Modi by the apex court appointed SIT and wanted the SIT to be reconstituted with a retired Supreme Court judge as its member.

‘‘Reconstitution of SIT at this stage is not good,” the Bench observed, which prompted the petitioner to withdraw her petition.

The SIT headed by former CBI chief R K Raghavan was appointed by the Supreme Court to probe nine cases related to the 2002 riots. In its 541-page report, the SIT said no evidence was found to prosecute Modi in any of the nine cases. The Apex Court had earlier expressed satisfaction over the SIT’s probe.

At least 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were burned and hacked to death during the 2002 Gujarat riots, for which the Congress and some other parties have squarely blamed Modi in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Human rights groups and political rivals have long alleged that Modi allowed or even actively encouraged the 2002 attacks. Modi has always vehemently denied the charge, insisting that he did all that he could to stop the violence.
